The Wanpa-rda Matilda Outback Education Centre offers comfortable, dormitory styled accommodation. We offer a complete, quality, health conscious, in house catering service which is very cost effective. For more information, please see our accommodation and dining facilities sections. 

Resource centre

More than just a modern classroom facility, the resource centre is available for use for over night school bookings. Boasting modern conference style furniture, you can sit in comfort in our centre as you watch movies or presentations on the three metre smart board, complete with short throw projector and PA sound system. It is ideal for educational seminars, movie night, liturgy, quiz nights or talent shows.


An oval and a large undercover games area are available for student use. Schools may bring sporting equipment to use in these two areas. We also have sporting equipment available at the centre including: basketballs, soccer balls and movable goals, t-ball, and cricket gear.

Outdoor undercover and indoor games areas

Assembly, outdoor dining, quiet study, free time activities or structured games can all be held rain or shine in the large undercover area located outside the dormitories. Set up perfectly for camp needs the undercover area includes dual key operated bbq’s, basketball setup and movable alloy bench / table settings. Ajoining the undercover area is the indoor games room complete with a variety of sports and play equipment as well as the ever popular ping pong table.

Television and VCR

Visitors are welcome to use the television, VCR and CD player. Please note the TV must be set on channel 3 to view videos, and there are limited VCR/DVD options available on site and schools are encouraged to bring there own media as there is no video rental store in town. An overhead projector, data projector and screen are also available on request. Please ensure remote controls are returned.


The dining room is equipped with a telephone. Visitors are welcome to use the phone to call home. The following types of calls can be made:

  • Local calls (must use phone card)

  • Reverse charge calls

  • Homelink 1800 calls

  • Our administration - (07) 4651 2530

  • Our dining room/dormitory - (07) 4651 1122

When giving parents a contact number, please provide the number of the dormitory phone, as the administration building is not staffed outside office hours. Mobile phones cannot be dialled out from the dormitory phone.


Mobile phone coverage

Barcaldine has coverage with the Telstra Next G phone network only. Please note other mobile phones will not work in Barcaldine unless they access the network roaming settings on their mobile phone.

All emergency calls should be made directly to 000 from all landlines, and 112 from all mobile phones.


You will be issued with one key which you may choose to leave in the combination key safe fixed to the outer wall of the dormitory. This key will open:

  • All dormitory doors

  • All kitchen doors

  • Padlocks on the toilet and shower gates

  • Staff toilet/shower

  • Padlock on the white gate, adjacent to the toilet block, giving access to the back oval.

A key for the bus driver’s room is issued separately.
