Wanpa-rda Matilda Outback Education Centre is idyllically located within the grounds of the Australian Workers Heritage Centre in Barcaldine. This first class excursion facility providing dormitory styled accommodation and in house catering facilities is ideally situated in the very heart of Queensland’s Central West and offers adventure packages to Australia’s biggest classroom - the outback.
Wanpa-rda - pronounced “warn-pra-da" - comes from the Wangkangurru people of the Birdsville district and means “to carry”. Matilda comes from the Banjo Paterson song Waltzing Matilda and refers to a bedroll or swag. So, "Wanpa-rda Matilda" means "to carry your swag".
Our centre provides the perfect base camp from which to explore the many sites of educational significance identified in this truly unique geographical region of Australia. Just a day trip away are attractions such as the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, the QANTAS Founders Outback Museum, the Tree of Knowledge, Blackall Wool Scour and a host of other exciting educational sites.
Participate in educational programs encompassing a wide range of outback themes, including our popular “Outback Survivor” program, Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage, democracy in Australia, and team building activities. An onsite qualified Education Officer will provide full planning support and assistance with flexibility in designing an itinerary, all bookings and catering to suit each school’s requirements. Curriculum resources including activity sheets are available to complement your visit to the Wanpa-rda Matilda Outback Education Centre.
Your students will be entranced and enthralled by their outback classroom and embrace all that the Australian outback has to offer. And it all comes with a guarantee that the memories will last a lifetime.
